Charlottesville's Downtown Mall: The Complete History

Coy will discuss the complete back-story and history of Charlottesville's Downtown Mall— from its beginnings as a native American walking trail to colonial road to main street to successful pedestrian plaza. His presentation will include numerous archival photographs as well as video of seldom seen city council meetings from the early 1970s when the mall proposal was hotly debated.
Coy Barefoot is a Wall Street Journal and Amazon.com best-selling author. His books include Thomas Jefferson on Leadership and The Corner: A History of Student Life at the University of Virginia, which won the 2003 Nalle Prize for Outstanding History. He has written and reported for magazines and newspapers around the country as well as a long list of online publications.
He has also worked in radio as a producer, investigative reporter, and talk show host. He is the host and producer of "Charlottesville--Right Now," a public affairs radio program that is broadcast on News Radio 1070AM WINA each weekday from 4-6pm. He speaks frequently for corporations, civic groups, schools, and to UVA alumni clubs around the country.
Coy is a graduate of the College of William and Mary and the University of Virginia where he earned his Master’s Degree in Anthropology, specializing in the study of the media and communications. He teaches about the life of Thomas Jefferson and the history of UVA, Charlottesville and Virginia in the School for Continuing and Professional Studies at the University of Virginia.
